What Notion AI Does
Notion AI is an add-on to the Notion workspace that brings AI capabilities directly into your notes, docs, databases, and project management. It can write, summarize, translate, brainstorm, extract action items, and answer questions about your workspace content — all without leaving Notion.
What We Tested
We used Notion AI for three weeks within an active Notion workspace: drafting meeting notes, summarizing long documents, generating action items from project pages, brainstorming content ideas, translating pages, and using the Q&A feature to search across our workspace.
What Works Well
- Context awareness: Because Notion AI lives inside your workspace, it can reference your existing pages, databases, and documents. Ask it "What did we decide about the marketing budget?" and it pulls the answer from your meeting notes. This contextual awareness is something standalone AI tools cannot match.
- Seamless integration: There is no copy-pasting between apps. Highlight text, click "Ask AI," and get a result inline. The friction is nearly zero. For people who already live in Notion, this is the smoothest AI writing experience available.
- Summarization: Notion AI excels at summarizing long pages, extracting key points, and generating action items. For meeting notes and project documentation, this feature alone saves significant time.
- Q&A across workspace: The ability to ask questions across your entire workspace is powerful. It functions as an intelligent search that understands natural language queries.
What Falls Short
- Writing quality: The raw writing output is serviceable but clearly behind Claude or ChatGPT. It reads as AI-generated and typically needs editing for any external-facing content. For internal docs and notes, it is fine. For blog posts or client communications, you will want a better writer.
- Price: Notion AI costs $10/member/month on top of your existing Notion subscription. For a team of 10, that is $100/month just for the AI add-on. Given that ChatGPT Plus at $20/month produces better writing, the value proposition is questionable unless the in-Notion integration is critical for your workflow.
- Limited creativity: Notion AI is best at structured, functional tasks — summarize this, extract that, rewrite this section. It struggles with genuinely creative or strategic thinking compared to Claude or ChatGPT with well-crafted prompts.
- Hallucination in Q&A: The workspace Q&A feature sometimes generates answers that combine information from unrelated pages, creating plausible but incorrect summaries. Always verify Q&A results against the source pages.
Notion AI vs ChatGPT vs Claude for Writing
If you need the best writing quality, Claude wins. If you need versatility and plugins, ChatGPT wins. Notion AI wins only when the integration advantage — working inside your existing workspace without context-switching — outweighs the quality gap. For most users, opening Claude in another tab and pasting the result back into Notion takes 10 extra seconds and produces notably better output.
Pricing
Notion AI costs $10/member/month as an add-on to any Notion plan. It is available on Free, Plus ($10/month), Business ($18/month), and Enterprise plans. The AI cost is per member, so it scales linearly with team size. No standalone AI plan — you must have a Notion subscription first.
The Verdict
Notion AI earns a B+ because the integration is genuinely seamless and the summarization and Q&A features add real value for heavy Notion users. But the writing quality is a step behind dedicated AI tools, and the per-member pricing makes it expensive for teams. If you already live in Notion and value zero-friction AI access over raw quality, the $10/month add-on is worth it. If writing quality matters or your team is larger than 3-4 people, use Claude or ChatGPT instead and paste results into Notion.
